Generative AI

Unless you live under a rock, you are most likely familiar with the term AI. Even with limited knowledge of computers and machine learning, you probably already know what it does. However, many things are changing, and it can be scary. I recently came across a new AI, called generative AI. As the title suggests, generative AI creates completely new images, sounds, and more. Many examples have been circulating on social media, such as deep fake images and images of aliens. The biggest one is generative voice AI, which means the AI can learn from past sounds or words a person has made and create entirely new sentences. An example of this is the new Juice WRLD songs which were released after his untimely death. Juice WRLD was a very influential rapper/hip-hop artist. After his death in 2020, using machine learning and artificial intelligence, we have been able to create completely new songs from him. Another example is when artists want to collaborate. Instead of wasting time recording, the person they are featuring will be AI-generated. While this may all be fun and nice, there is a dark side to it. One of these things is copyright infringement. If you use AI without the actual artist's knowledge, it's like stealing their voice, and you could be sued for millions. Another thing is fake calls. If hackers gain access to your phone, they could put your past calls into the AI. This allows them to call anyone, including relatives and co-workers, and request money. An actual example that has happened recently is when a hacker called a person's grandma, acting like he went to jail, and asked for bail money. Unfortunately, the grandma did not know that the call was fake, and she was scammed. By looking at these multiple examples, we can see the positives and negatives of generative AI.
